Who it's for

Being good at the job isn't the same as leading people who do it

Most new managers get the job because they were the best at the work. Then nobody shows them how to manage the people doing it. So they fix things themselves, put off the awkward conversation, and struggle to manage the friends they used to work alongside.

This programme is for people in the 12 months either side of that step up:

THE STEP UP
Up to 12 months before
Aspiring leaders
you expect to promote soon and want ready before they start
Up to 12 months after
New leaders
who've been promoted in the last year and are now managing a team, often their old peers

The four workshops

What they'll be able to do by the end

Workshop 1 · Tuesday 20 October

The leadership transition

Making the shift from doing the work to leading it.

By the end they'll be able to
✓Know what kind of leader they want to be
✓Build credibility with the team, including old peers
✓Hand work over at the right level, without dumping it or hovering over it
✓Run a short team briefing that actually lands
Workshop 2 · Tuesday 3 November

Performance and accountability

Setting the standard and following it through.

By the end they'll be able to
✓Set expectations people can't misread
✓Have the difficult performance conversation instead of avoiding it
✓Write things down fairly: facts and behaviour, not opinions
✓Run 1-to-1s that move people forward, not status updates
Workshop 3 · Tuesday 17 November

Managing conflict

Dealing with friction before it grows.

By the end they'll be able to
✓Spot what's really behind a disagreement
✓Know their own default in conflict, and when to change it
✓Use a simple structure for a hard conversation
✓Mediate between two team members
✓Know when to handle it and when to escalate
Workshop 4 · Thursday 3 December

Building your team

Turning a group of people into a team.

By the end they'll be able to
✓Build a team where people speak up and admit mistakes
✓Work out what stage the team is at, and what moves it on
✓Get honest feedback from their own team
✓Tell real motivators apart from things that just stop people complaining
✓Leave with a written plan for the next quarter

01

Coaching between every workshop

One-to-one calls where delegates bring a real situation from their week. Four calls of 60 minutes, arranged in the week to suit the learner and trainer.

02

Practice in the real job

After each workshop they try one tool with their own team, then review it on their next coaching call.

03

You can see the change

Delegates complete a confidence assessment before and after, so you can compare where they started with where they finished.

04

Small groups

Delegate numbers are kept small, so everyone works on their own situations.

05

Theirs to keep

A workbook and reference handouts for every workshop.

06

Questions, answered

Is this a qualification?

No. It's a practical development programme, not an accredited qualification. It's run by Stand & Deliver, an ILM-accredited training centre. If you need a formal qualification, we can talk you through those options on the call.

Will it fit our sector?

Yes. It's built for new leaders in any sector. Delegates bring situations from their own team, so the practice fits their job.

How much time will they be away from work?

Four mornings of three hours, plus four 60-minute coaching calls arranged around their week. All online, so no travel.

What do they need?

A laptop with a camera, a headset, and a quiet room for three hours.

What happens on the discovery call?

You tell us who you're thinking of putting forward and what's going on. We tell you honestly whether this programme fits. If it doesn't, we'll say so.

Don't leave your new manager to work it out alone

Every month a new manager struggles, the team feels it too. Book a short call and we'll tell you honestly whether this programme fits the person you have in mind.
